Sourdough Bread

Andrew and I love sourdough bread, especially as toast in the morning. The problem is it's expensive and the closest store that sells it is 45 min away. So... I'm adventuring into making a sourdough start. I started the start (that sounds funny) last night and it's already smelling sour. yummm.... I'm hoping I won't screw it up.

I've talked to many who said they tried to make sourdough and it has never worked out for them. I'm not a very good baker (I make up for it in my cooking skills) but I know that many in my family ARE bakers. Have any of you tried it? Or have any good suggestions?

I'll let you know in 3-5 days how it goes.

  1. I used to have a sour dough starter. Good bread but you do have to keep it up. Hope your start develops well.

As a side note: When Jared was 3 or 4 months old we got a babysitter for an evening. I told the babysitter there was a bottle of milk (hand-expressed breast milk, read hard to come by) in the fridge. When we got home she had given Jared a bottle. She bypassed the prepared bottle at the front of the top shelf to find the sourdough starter in a glass vitamin bottle with a glass top. She then had to search in the cupboards to find a playtex shell, nipple and liner. Jared was a little gassy but suffered no other ill effects. {He's how old and I still haven't gotten over that!?!]

  2. Funny, Suzanne! I bought a sourdough starter in Anchorage and Grandma used it for many years. I've never started one from scratch so anxious to hear how yours turns out! I love sourdough!

  3. One thing I know for sure about sourdough -- it doesn't like metal. So after your start is finished, don't mix it in one. Sourdough loves glass bowls and containers best. I've only made sourdough pancakes, but I think the principal is the same. Good luck!
